Biology Collection (2nd 20 Terms)

This rat's ability to live in many different environments as well as eat a broad selection of foods is an example of an adaption of an animal.

The spines covering these cacti are an example of an adaption of a plant. Cacti normally grow in areas where there is little precipitation, mainly deserts. Due to its habitat, a cactus stores water in itself, allowing its survival in such a dry environment. The prickly spines that both keep animals from eating cacti and reduce the cactus's transpiration (loss of water vapor through certain parts of plants) are responsible for their survival.

This rice contains amylase. Amylase is an enzyme that breaks down starch into sugar. Amylase is active in rice while it is in the mouth of whomever is eating it, giving the rice a slightly sweet flavor because the amylase is breaking down the abundant supply of starch present in the rice as soon as it comes in contact with moisture.

This flower possesses an anther & filament of stamen. The anther of a flower is used to produce pollen for the sake of fertilization. A stamen is the reproductive organ of a male flower and the filament is the small stem supporting the stamen.

This (beauitiful) tarantula is an arthropod. Arthropods are invertebrate animals that have segmented bodies, jointed appendages, and an exoskeleton, as seen in the photograph. These animals include spiders, butterflies, and crustraceans.

These mushrooms are basidiomycetes, which come from Urediniomycetes, a class of fungi.

These pineapples are C 4 plants, which are plants that contain carbon fixation pathways needed for the carbon cycle to be carried out.

This asparagus contains cambium, which is a "lateral meristem in the vascular tissue of plants." This is used to make secondary growths on plants possible.

This snake is a deuterostome, which is an animal possessing a mouth as the opening for food on one side of its body and an anus as the opening for waste on the opposite side of the body.

This starfish is an echinoderm, which is a phylum of sea animals that are mainly starfish.

The inside of this bisected lemon seed contains endosperm, which is the tissue that flowering plants produce under their seeds when it comes time for fertilization. The dominantly white area seen inside each half of the seed is the endosperm.

This plant is called a frond, which is defined as a divided leaf of a large size.

This saltwater snail is a gastropod, which is a taxonomic class of mollusks that are commonly called snails and slugs. These organisms belong to the phylum Mollusca and snails are commonly seen living in shells. They have an uncanny ability to live in an array of habitats, from estuaries and mudflats to deserts and woodlands.

These saddleback clownfish are hermaphrodites, which are organisms that are able to be both male and female. Clownfish live in a sea anemone in the ocean, where there is a group of clownfish living in it. In the group, there is one breeding pair and a number of non-productive and smaller male clownfish. In the event that the female dies, her male mate changes sex and becomes a female, which is known as sequential hermaphroditism. A more interesting fact is that all clownfish are born male!

This tree is a K-strategist. K-strategists are organisms whose survival depends upon their long life expectancy and size. They are regularly large in size and have a small number of offspring per conception. Although they have few offspring in their lives, K-strategists' offspring require extensive parenting and learned abilities until they mature, unlike r-strategists. Other examples of K-strategists are humans and whales.

These turtles are littoral zone organsims, which are organisms that live in or often inhabit the area between land and sea. These areas are normally shorelines or beaches that humans are known to visit.

The powder present upon this flower's anther is called pollen. Pollen is a fine to coarse powder produced by male flowers with their anthers. It contains male gametes, or sperm cells, needed for the growth of new flowers.

This sea sponge is an organism that belongs to the phylum Porifera, which consists of organisms that are harvested for the manufacturing of bath sponges based upon their spongy appearance and texture.

This gerbil (who was so nice as to wave at us) is an r-strategist, which means that its survival depends heavily upon its ability to produce offspring quickly and in large numbers. The ability for their offspring to mature quickly is also a survival factor.

This sunflower's shape shows radial symmetry, which means that because it is equal on all sides, it can be divided in any direction and still look identical to the slices.
