Organisms that grow on rocks, trees, or bare ground. Lichen is composed of a green alga and a colorless fungus which co-exist for their mutual benefit. The alga has chlorophyll which manufactures its own food through photosynthesis; the fungus has no chlorophyll it absorbs food from the alga.
