Stem-woody

The persistent main stalk of a shrub, typically rising above ground. The outer layer is the cortex which may be covered with a corky bark. Underneath is the phloem and the green cambium layer. Inside is the active xylem layer and pervious annual rings of xylem. In the center is a region called the pith.
